Remember always that dates written in BC start to decrease as we move forward in time and dates written in AD increases as we move forward in time.

You may have seen written AD somewhere and BC somewhere in the Historical dates . Have you realized actually what does they mean ?

For example Buddha was born on 5th or 6th century BC and Muhammad was born on 5th century AD what is the difference?

The date or Calendar system is categorized into two portions of time BC and AD. The term BC stand for Before christ and term AD stand for Anno Domini in latin “year of our lord”. As human civilization goes back to approximately 10000 years back there was no zero point for calendar system i.e. start of the year. So , pope of the catholic church standarise the calendar system by considering birth year of jesus as the zero point.

Major Historical events before the birth of christ are written in BC and after the birth of christ are written in AD. Birth of christ is kept reference or zero point for Gregorian Calendar system. Remember always that dates written in BC start to decrease as we move forward in time and dates written in AD increases as we move forward in time. When you write 500 BC then you mean 500 years ago from jesus birth or zero point. Similarly when you write 500 AD you mean 500 years after jesus birth. Buddha was born in 6th century BC means he was born 2600 years ago. As there was no other standard calendar system thus historians and scientist used Gregorian calendar system to represent major historical events and this is how our date system got evolved.

Difference between BC/BCE and AD/CE:

The abbreviation BCE stand for Before common era and CE stand for common era. BCE is just a secular version of BC and CE is just a secular version of AD. Thus , 5th century BC and 5th century BCE are same point of time as 12 century AD and 12 century CE. As BC goes on descending order as we move forward in time , the correct format for writing date in BC is: 600 BC not BC 600. But, in AD you can write in both format AD 600 or 600 AD.
